…….So you’ve just been told by your medical centre that you need to make an appointment with your GP to discuss the results of a recent Pap Smear. This is never a great thing to hear and usually means that your Pap Smear has returned an abnormal result. If this is the first time you’ve been called with this unusual request it’s understandable that you may be feeling a bit of concern. It’s human nature to fear the unknown or things we’re yet to understand. When it first happened to me I was beside myself in panic (keep in mind about my GAD at the time) If it’s the second time you’ve had an abnormal result you’re likely to be less worried, far more informed and at ease with a good understanding that cervical cancer takes a really long time to develop, years in some cases. 

You most certainly have time to research, educate yourself, get a second opinion and make informed decisions regarding your treatment. More than anything you need to jump on your immune health to reverse the stress as this is something your GP will NEVER discuss with you. It doesn’t even come into their formal training that healing the immune system will take away the HPV that’s causing the cells to change.

The HPV which affects 80% people in their lifetime is what creates the environment for our cells to behave abnormally. Once infected with the HPV through sexual interaction it can take around a year before symptoms such as vaginal warts may become apparent. If vaginal warts are not developing HPV can continue undetected until it’s discovered at your next routine Pap Smear screening.

Initially the first occurrence will be notification from your medical centre that your Pap Smear was abnormal and they’ll request that you come back in for further discussion. At your second appointment your GP will disclose to you if your screening came back with a low-grade or high-grade abnormality. If it’s a low-grade reading you’ll generally be given another chance to repeat the Pap Smear test. If the test has returned a high grade reading you’ll be referred directly to a gynaecologist who’ll make an assessment based on a physical inspection.

If you’ve made it to the stage of seeing the gynaecologist for a high grade abnormality that you were not aware of before your Pap Smear then it’s likely that you’re not yet showing any physical symptoms such as vaginal warts. Warts are a natural symptom of the HPV. The gynaecologist may tell you that the only way to remove these warts is to have them lasered off. This is not correct information. There are natural remedies on the market which include herbal creams and ointments that will help to remove warts and keep them at bay quickly without the need for laser. Dealing with abnormal cells can be traumatic enough without the shame and stress associated with developing vaginal warts. 

Your gynaecologist will do a full examination of the cervix to locate, identify and assess any cells that are abnormal and will more than likely suggest to you that those cells should be cut out. It’s not often recognised or discussed by the gynaecologist the state of the patient’s immune system which is the key factor in fighting HPV. Cutting out suspect cells will not change the fact that you still have the virus. They may suggest that you get the Gardasil vaccination or something similar to fight HPV. I strongly advise that you do your own research on the Gardasil shot before allowing anyone to inject the contents into your bloodstream.
